WRDA 2000 Pilot Projects:
Lake Belt In-Ground Reservoir Technology
headline dots

Description - Investigate effects of alternative subterranean seepage barriers around the perimeter of existing lime rock mining areas for use as in-ground reservoirs. Water quality assessments will include a determination as to whether the in-ground reservoirs and seepage barriers will allow for storage of untreated waters without concerns of ground water contamination.

Purpose - Several components use areas where lime rock mining will have occurred. This pilot project is necessary to determine the feasibility of using these lakes as reservoirs that can be drawn down during dry periods without significant seepage losses and without impacting water quality due to transmissivity of the aquifer in these areas.

Benefits - Determine construction technologies, storage efficiencies, impacts on local hydrology and water quality effects.
