About Using RSS Web Feeds
What are RSS web feeds?
RSS (or Really Simple Syndication) feeds are free content feeds from Web sites that provide users with frequently updated content. Content distributors syndicate a web feed, thereby allowing users to subscribe to it. RSS is an easy way for you to be alerted when content that interests you appears on your favorite Web sites. Instead of visiting a particular Web site to browse for new articles and features, RSS automatically tells you when something new is posted online.
What tools do I need to use RSS?
To start using RSS, you need a special news reader or aggregator that can display RSS content feeds from Web sites you select. There are many different news readers available, many of which are free of charge. Most are available as desktop software that you download and install on your computer.
- Internet Explorer 7 has an RSS reader built-in to the browser. If you are using an older version of the browser than you can download a news reader application or install a newer version of the browser. More information on IE and RSS web feeds can be found at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/rss/default.mspx
- Firefox also has a built-in feed reader called “Live Bookmarks”. You can also use a feed reader that you’ve installed on your computer or through a Web service such as My Yahoo!, Bloglines or Google Reader.
- Google has a good help page about feeds. Once you have set up your news reader, you simply subscribe to the RSS content feeds you want.
Why use RSS?
Subscribing to feeds makes it possible to review a large amount of new online content "at a glance". You can keep track of your favorite websites without having to remember to check each site individually or being overwhelmed by e-mail.
