The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hosted an Eco-Awareness and Career Fair at Paxon Middle School as part of Paxon’s Career Awareness Month.

“This environmental education experience introduced eighth grade students to the many types of “green” career opportunities available,” says Nanciann Regalado, program manager for strategic communication and outreach for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District.   “We also unveiled a special Everglades music video that was written and performed by some of Paxon’s enormously talented students!”

Over  200 eighth graders participated in the Eco-awareness and Career Fair. Highlights of the event included:

  • Career Booth Visits – Group discussions were held by federal, state and local government participants including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Duval County  Health Department and the Florida Department of Parks.
  • Motivational Speaker – Radio personality T-Roy made a surprise visit and provided words of motivation and inspiration to the very attentive students.  T-Roy's message included telling the students that knowledge and education are critical to their success.
  • Eco Tour Music Video – The Corps unveiled an exciting new music video written and performed by some of Paxon’s very own students. The music video, to the Everglades, was created after the students were inspired by a field trip to the Everglades, which was supported in part by Everglades National Park.
  • Billboard Unveiling – Also unveiled at the fair was an Everglades Eco-Tour billboard, which will be located at the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and Beaver Street.  Clear Channel"s generous donation of billboard space made this part of the Everglades Eco-Tour Program possible.
