Public Workshop
March 1, 2005

Project Description:
The proposed Site 1 Impoundment project is a component of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). Located in southwest Palm Beach County, west of Boca Raton, the project consists of a 1,660-acre impoundment and associated structures, and is capable of holding 8 feet of water for a total storage volume of 13,280 acre-feet.

Project Purpose:
Supplement water deliveries to the Hillsboro Canal by capturing and storing excess water currently discharged to the Intracoastal Waterway. These supplemental deliveries will reduce demands on Lake Okeechobee and the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. Release impounded water back to the Hillsboro Canal when needed to provide groundwater recharge, reduce seepage from adjacent natural areas, and provide protection from saltwater intrusion. Improve the health of the Intracoastal Waterway estuary. May provide additional flood protection.

Workshop Purpose:
The purpose of the workshop is to present and take public comments on the draft Project Implementation Report (PIR) and Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Site 1 Impoundment Project. These documents provide a detailed plan to accomplish the project goals. The draft PIR can be downloaded and viewed on the site at www.evergladesplan.org/pm/projects/docs_40_site_1_pir.aspx
